New approach means new career for former lawyer

Jim had no idea what to do next.

After becoming a lawyer and practising for four years, he suddenly found himself without a job and with no clear direction for his future.

“I didn’t want to go back to practising law in a similar firm or role,” he remembers. “But beyond that I just didn’t know what the opportunities were, and I didn’t know how I could use my skills or transfer into something else. I did not have a lot of job leads and didn’t have much of a sense of where I was going to go or who was going to help me get there.”

Intrigued by ads in the local newspaper, Jim visited the Capstone website. Initially he wasn’t sure if the company’s services could help him, but he decided to make contact and find out.

That contact changed everything.

“Most of my time was spent with Linda and she was very diligent in getting me on track,” Jim says. “I hadn’t really done a good job in my previous practice of building a network of relationships with people. I did not have the skills to do that. Linda was able to start me off from scratch. She was able to improve my overall skills, especially my networking and interview skills. She conveyed to me the importance of building those relationships both within a company and also with people I meet every day.”

Linda helped Jim understand that focus is the key to a successful job search. Rather than sending hundreds of resumes at random to potential employers, she encouraged him to first identify his goals, then target specific companies or opportunities. She also taught him how important it is to make personal contact with important people in those companies, even if they aren’t hiring at the time.

In addition, she helped him re-vamp his resume to emphasize the experiences, skills, and qualities that would catch an employer’s attention.

Jim says he appreciated Linda’s emphasis on working with purpose.

“She keeps a close eye on the job search techniques that you are using and she is able to point out where you are probably going wrong,” he explains. “She always recognized the importance of getting further in the job search and acting productively. For her, it was never just about action for its own sake. It was about moving ahead and getting things done and I respected that.”   

After re-writing his resume, Jim followed Linda’s advice and made an effort to expand his network. He posted his information on a website that specializes in helping lawyers transition to different careers. He didn’t expect a response right away, so he was pleasantly surprised when the president of the site called and referred him to a position with a company that might interest him. Two interviews later – interviews he aced with help and advice from Capstone – he had a new job and a much brighter future.

“I always knew that the point of Capstone was not to get me a job directly, but to give me skills, knowledge, and experience,” Jim explains. “I wanted to make a career transition and I wanted to figure out what my goals were. I learned that you have to keep building your base of people, because you don’t know whether tomorrow or down the road you may need those contacts.
